In Lost Signals as you explore space your primary objective is to decipher signals right? So now it's modeling time (I am not a modeler). My approach with this one is to go with simple but straightforward with how it works. Looking at references on how scientific instruments usually look, I'll be going based off those in a more polygonal route but also replacing most buttons or functions with larger buttons, levers, slides, and screens you'd expect in fallout 3.
